IPG Members Recognized at the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) Celebration of Excellence

Several members of the IPG were recognized at CAFNR’s Celebration of Excellence which was held on Tuesday, April 19th. This was the first in-person Celebration of Excellence since 2019 and in some categories, awards were presented to 2021 and 2022 recipients.


Dr. Antje Heese was awarded the Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Award for 2021. Dr. Heese, an associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry, was recognized for her mentoring of students, not only in their professional endeavors, but also for her dedication in helping them succeed in all aspects of their lives. This award recognizes “the efforts of faculty and professional advisors mentoring and guiding undergraduate students to degree completion”. Dr. Felix Fritschi was presented with the Roger L. Mitchell Fellow Award for 2022. Dr. Fritschi, the C. Alice Donaldson Professor in Bioenergy Crop Physiology and Genetics in the Division of Plant Science and Technology, was recognized for his outstanding research record, including $28.1 million in grants in the last five years, his leadership positions in the American Society of Agronomy and the Crop Science Society of America and other accomplishments. The Roger L. Mitchell award is named in honor of a previous CAFNR dean and is awarded to a faculty member who “elevates the College through collaboration and innovative thinking”. Michelle Brooks was awarded the Mumford Outstanding Staff Award for 2021. Michelle, coordinator of the MU Plant Growth Facilities, was recognized for her commitment to supporting research in the growth facilities as well as mentoring and teaching students, including those working at Tiger Garden. The Mumford award recognizes a “College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources staff member for sustained excellence in executing assigned duties, and for their effectiveness in support of the mission of their unit and the College”. Dr. Scott Peck received the Mumford Outstanding Faculty Award for 2022. Dr. Peck, a professor in the Department of Biochemistry, was recognized for his research accomplishment, mentorship of students and postdocs, as well as service to his department in the revising of their undergraduate degree program. The Mumford award recognizes a CAFNR faculty member for “a sustained record of excellence in teaching, research and/or Extension/outreach”.
