The 2020 Interdisciplinary Plant Group Symposium will focus on Precision Plants for Health and Food Security and will be held from May 27-29, 2020 at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. Food demand within the following decades is expected to double, and meeting the demand for food sustainably and responsibly will require a dramatic shift from the intensive agricultural practices used today. Moreover, climate change poses an additional challenge that may limit the yield increase needed to ensure food security on a global scale. This coming IPG symposium will include researchers from diverse areas including synthetic biology, gene editing, metabolism, phenotyping, and modeling to explore and discuss strategies to engineer smarter plants capable of thriving in challenging environments with minimal input of pesticides and fertilizers. An additional goal of this symposium is to facilitate the exchange of ideas between stakeholders and scientists to define a path forward towards a sustainable and viable way to achieve food security.
